Efficiency and availability of protections offered to employed caregivers

Abstract
In Canada, many workers act as caregivers in addition to their professional responsibilities. The challenges of reconciling these roles lead many to leave their jobs or the job market, for lack of accommodation. Aim: This research aims to identify the laws that govern and protect the employment relationships of Canadian caregivers. Methods: A review of documentary sources was conducted to identify case law related to the balance between caregiving and employment and ways to protect the employment relationship. Findings: Results show that these protections are not uniform across the country. Discussion: In this context, some managers choose to go beyond their legal obligations, by voluntarily offering their workers flexible work arrangements, which appear to be more effective in meeting the needs of employed caregivers.
